I try to avoid overusing “the” in my writings so I thought would reblog an earlier post expressing my feelings on this very large little word.
Such a mildly innocuous appearing word so often used
It permeates both heart and soul of most realms poetic
Three little letters seemingly innocent yet often misused
Filling those often empty spaces between words so often used
Without thought or comprehension of most realms poetic
Three little letters seemingly innocent so often misused
In Seven Sonnets Chaucer yet not seven times so often used
This baseless word to lift him out of most realms poetic
Three little letters instead of windmills all too often misused
All in all life demands it be so often used
To fill our dreams of those realms poetic
Three little letters arrow words often misused
What critic requires this word be so often used
To pull us through those lost realms poetic
Three little letters marking words often misused
Where did this word begin to be so often used
Leading fruitless treks through realmsโฆ

Thank you. I started this when a professor challenged our class to write a series of essays and poems and then go back and cross out as many “the”s as we could without destroying the original. Lot of fun…:)

Great fun…indeed. I remember doing something with my students at High School. ๐
