Exposure, Privation, Madness

Things were mostly confused back then
Why had he ever gone off to war?
Returning home was just another mistake
He should have been surprised, but wasn’t
For once started there was no turning back

Nothing remained the same as before
He had followed those chosen paths
Knowing there could be no right or wrong
All stories were more or less true
Yet none believed a word that was said

Exposure helped him know bitterness
Privation held an awareness of pain
Madness brought the sweetness of life
Had he cared to live, he would have died
